5.68. Say: O People of the Scripture! Ye have naught (of guidance) till ye observe the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto you from your Lord. That which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them. But grieve not for the disbelieving folk. (Pickthall)
5.68. Sag: Ihr, Leute der Schrift, ihr fußt auf nichts, bis ihr die Taura feststehend macht und das Indschil, und was zu euch herabgesandt wurde von eurem Herrn, und bestimmt nehmen viele von ihnen, wegen dem, was auf dich herabgesandt wurde von deinem Herrn, zu an Auflehnung und Glaubensverweigerung, also sei nicht betrübt über das Volk der Glaubensverweigerer. Die dir von deinem Herrn herabgesandte Offenbarung löst bei vielen von ihnen Haß aus und bringt sie zu mehr Zügellosigkeit und Unglauben. Trauere den Ungläubigen nicht nach!" (Azhar)
5.68. Sag: ‚Ihr Schriftbesitzer! Ihr habt nichts (vom Din), bis ihr At-taurat und Alindschil und das einhaltet, was euch von eurem HERRN hinabgesandt wurde. Und viele von ihnen wird das, was dir von deinem HERRN hinabgesandt wurde, gewiss zu noch mehr Übertretung und Kufr veranlassen. So sei nicht traurig wegen der kufr-betreibenden Gemeinschaft! Was von deinem Herrn (als Offenbarung) zu dir herabgesandt worden ist, wird sicher viele von ihnen in ihrer Widersetzlichkeit und ihrem Unglauben noch bestärken. Aber gewiß, das, was von deinem Herrn zu dir herabgesandt wurde, wird viele von ihnen in ihrem Aufruhr und Unglauben bestärken. Darum betrübe dich nicht über die ungläubigen Leute. (Rasul)
Tafsir von Maududi für die Ayaat 67 bis 68
O Messenger, convey to the people whatever has been sent down to you from your Lord; for, if you do not do this, you will not be doing justice to His Message. Allah will protect you from the mischievous deeds of the people. Rest assured that He will not show the disbelievers the way to success (against you). Tell them plainly, "O people of the Book, you have no valid ground to stand on unless you observe the Torah and the Gospel and the other Books which have been sent down to you from your Lord. " ( 97 ) It is certain that the foregoing decree which has been sent down to you from your Lord, will increase all the more the rebellion and disbelief of many of them, ( 98 ) but you should not grieve for the disbelievers.
Desc No: 97 "To observe the Torah and the Gospel" means to follow their teachings sincerely and to follow the code of life laid down in them. In this connection, one must keep in mind that the Bible contains two kinds of writings. Some portions in it have been interpolated by the Jewish and the Christian scholars. It is obvious that the Qur'an does not demand the observance of these parts. But there are other portions that have been put down as the Commandments of God or as the sayings of Moses, Jesus and other Prophets (Allah's peace be upon them all). The Qur'an demands the observance of the latter parts only, for there is no marked difference between the teachings contained in them and those !;f the Qur'an. Though even these parts of the Bible have not remained wholly intact and have been tampered with by the translators, the commentators etc., nevertheless, one does feel that they teach the same fundamental principle of Tauhid that the Qur'an teaches, present the same creed which the Qur'an presents, and guides man to the same way of life that has been laid down in the Qur'an. Thus it is clear that if the Jews and the Christians had been following those teachings which have been attributed to God and their Prophets in the Bible, must surely they would have been a community of righteous people at the time when Muhammad (Allah's peace be upon him) was sent as a Messenger and would have readily recognized that the Qur'an contained the same Message that was contained in the former Books. In that case they would have felt no difficulty in following the Holy Prophet, for, then, there would have been no question of changing their religion: this would have been a continuation of the same way that they were following before.
Desc No: 98 The foregoing decree enjoined by Allah will increase their rebellion and disbelief .because they will not consider it with a cool mind but in their obduracy oppose it more vigorously. "
